Pinctada Fucata is the term for the saltwater mollusk that produces Akoya cultured pearls.  Akoya cultured pearls are produced by a deliberate human intervention in these saltwater mollusks generally found in the waters around Japan and China. It is by far the most popular pearl in the world. The Akoya pearl ranges in size from 2mm-9.5mm and common colors include  white, rose, silver, cream and gold. The Akoya remains justly famous in the hierarchy of cultured pearls for its spectacular luster and beauty.  Today virtually all Akoya pearls are cultured.
