Mabe Cultured Pearls

mabe_single_2.jpg

Mabe  pearls  are grown in Japan, China and the United States. They are hemispherical cultured pearls grown with "half bead" nucleus against the shell of the side of an oyster rather than within the oyster's body.  After the mollusk has secreted nacre over the "half bead" , the pearl is cut from the shell, the nucleus removed and pearl is cleaned thoroughly.  The blister pearl is then filled with a paste of wax and covered with a mother of pearl backing.

Mabe pearls are generally are used in earrings, rings, and enhancers in  which they can easily conceal the mother of pearl flat backs.
